Position Description
Access Programs' Summer Academic Challenge (SAC) is a four-week innovative STEAM enrichment program serving low income, first generation in college, and students of color primarily from Tacoma Public Schools and Pierce County. Students arrive on June 26, 2024, and finish the program on July 24, 2024.
Teachers must have experience and enjoy teaching in collaborative student-centered learning environments. Ideal candidates have experience teaching in STEAM fields and are enthusiastic and innovative. We are seeking three teachers, each to work with a group of 20-25 students in one of the following grade levels: 7th/8th, 9th/10th, and 11th/12th. This position training dates are June 22, 24, 25.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
9th and 10th grade: Mind Matters: Navigating Wellness - This theme will focus on mental health in Tacoma, Washington, students will explore local mental health services, emphasizing access and affordability. The curriculum will examine various support systems available in the community and address challenges related to mental health resources, including financial barriers. An integral part of the program will be to incorporate art as a means of expression and healing. Students will explore how artistic endeavors contribute to mental well-being. The curriculum aims to promote a more in-depth scientific understanding of mental health issues and empower students with tools to support themselves and others within the Tacoma community.
11th and 12th grade: Up to Code - Students will create their own websites by learning coding languages: HTML as the building block of their website, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to add style to their sites, and JavaScript to add function to their sites. Students will work as a team to create these functional webpages, and to research the topic of their websites. Website development uses all parts of STEAM, coming together to create functional and engaging products. Concepts of computer science help students understand how advances in technology and engineering affect website capabilities and how coding language is used; technological advances combine with art to create engaging and appealing websites; and mathematics combines art and engineering in coding concepts. Students will use their research skills and coding skills to create a new website, combining their knowledge to demonstrate understanding of social justice, local Tacoma needs and opportunities, and how to successfully research a topic including how to look at different sources, how to gather research materials, and how to format their research into a website.
Preferred Requirements
Certification in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, or Math (STEAM) teaching for middle and/or high school students
Compensation and Benefits:
The anticipated range for this position is $24.00 to $24.00. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.

This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
