Hiring Department:
The Institute for Human Development (IHD), a University Center on Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), is an applied research and training center for human services designed to exemplify the University's goals of engaged scholarship and community partnerships. Its functions include interdisciplinary training, applied research, community program development and information dissemination.

Job Description
This position primarily will provide strategic communications counsel primarily to the University Center for Excellence for Developmental Disabilities and for various programs with the Institute for Human Development as needed. The position will create and execute strategic communication plans,
manage and coordinate a wide range of communications projects to support, promote and enhance the
UCEDD and UMKC-IHD. The incumbent will:
  • Serve as a project manager for communications activities primarily within the UCEDD and across IHD as needed
  • Develop strategic communication plans for a variety of projects and translate complex information into understandable messages
  • Build relationships across IHD, primarily serving the UCEDD, supporting IHD and other programs across the organization as needed
  • Draft and edit digital media content for IHD and IHD-managed websites; post content regularly to websites and social media as determined by communication plans
  • Manage analytics for all social media and websites under the IHD umbrella; provide timely monthly reports and make recommendations on how to build the audience and engagement for selected sites
  • Manage updates, improvements and maintenance on various WordPress websites supported by IHD
  • Develop and execute communication strategies based on target audiences, messaging and selected communications channels
  • Write a variety of communications, such as postcards, one-sheets, flyers, brochures and more, for programs within IHD and ensure appropriate tone, with attention to Plain Language, people-first language to ensure accessibility
  • Design a variety of communications to support the projects and program needs across IHD ensuring use of alternative text and accessibility through design
  • Develop and manage year-long calendar of upcoming projects
  • Provide communication support to leaders as needed for PowerPoint presentations, briefing sheets, talking points, etc.
  • Draft scripts and guide production of videos for various needs across IHD as needed
  • Drive consistency with communications to ensure they adhere to IHD branding across various parts of the organization and across various communication channels
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

Accreditation in Public Relations from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) or comparable certification from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)
  • Mature communications consulting skills developed through agency or related experiences
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience working with digital media, including WordPress and social media
  • Basic design skills including work with InDesign and other design software
