Job Description

The University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing in Columbia, MO invites applications for a professional Nursing Instructor position. The primary role is education and technical assistance to long-term care (LTC) facility nursing staff about quality improvement practices, latest clinical evidence-based practices in nursing and health care, and evidence-based organizational improvement practices. This assistance is provided through travel, or by phone, e-mail, webinars, or Zoom. Expertise in gerontological nursing is required with experience in LTC or care of the elderly, preferred. This person will serve nursing homes primarily in the Springfield region of MO; living in the region is preferred. Travel is required throughout the Springfield region and occasional travel to other locations will be necessary. Large and small group public speaking/presentations will be required.

A working knowledge of the required federal nursing home Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) process is essential for this position. This includes the Minimum Data Set (MDS), Care Area Assessment (CAA,) and Care Planning in regard to the required coding and reporting interpretations and regulations. A working knowledge of MDS-derived quality measures (QMs) that have been nationally-developed and reported to facilities and the public and communication skills to communicate effectively with the nursing home staff to assist them in using the QMs in their practices are a necessity. Applicants need a working knowledge of the 5-STAR reports that are publicly accessible regarding nursing home care.

This job requires the skills to work directly with MO's LTC facility management staff in the implementation of teams for decision-making and quality improvement as well as the ability to work with all levels of MO's LTC facility staff to assist them in developing high-performing work teams.
An ability to maintain confidentiality while working with the individual facilities is vital. Demonstrated ability to implement planned change and assist direct care staff to improve systems of care in health care organizations is essential.

It is crucial that applicants have the ability to establish collaborative working relationships with interdisciplinary faculty and research staff at MU to develop needed links with experts in many areas that may be essential to assisting facilities with many different kinds of clinical and organizational practice issues.

It is also imperative for candidates to have an ability to establish collaborative working relationships with the staff of the MO Department of Health and Senior Services (MODHSS) and carry out the required work in collaboration with the MODHSS. In addition, this role may include coordinating and building relationships with LTC facilities in MO who participate in MU research projects.

This position requires timely entries into the database of all facility contacts (on-site visits, phone calls, e-mails, etc.) therefore access to the Internet is necessary. Collaboration among all members of the MU QIPMO team is an expectation of the job.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • 2-3 years of nursing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired, in long-term care (LTC) is necessary
  • BSN is required - Candidates will be evaluated on having an MSN, from an accredited college or university
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri is required

  • Ability to enter text via computer technology for purposes of timely data entry; working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; and ability to communicate via zoom or other virtual platforms is preferred.
