Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated full-time data scientist to join Dr.Michael Pesko's lab.Dr. Pesko's research categorizes health policy changes and estimates the effects of these changes on health-related outcomes using survey and administrative data sources.The lab is currently generously funded by multiple awards from the National Institutes of Health and American Cancer Society for research in areas of tobacco control, hearing healthcare, and cancer prevention / early detection health insurance benefits. Lab members publish in top-tier clinical, public health, health policy, and economics journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, Health Affairs, American Journal of Public Health, and Journal of Health Economics.

The primary responsibility of this role is to execute data management and cleaning tasks in a careful and efficient manner. The successful candidate will have strong Stata programming skills and familiarity with commonly used commends like -egen-, -collapse-, and -merge-. The successful candidate will also carefully check their work to ensure code is performing correctly, and will regularly ask questions and update the PI on data cleaning and analysis projects.

The position can be performed in-person or remotely. If performed remotely, the individual will need to travel to the University of Missouri once a year for a few days for a series of meetings.

Data Scientist
  • Use clean, accessible code in Stata to organize, manipulate, and link large, micro-level data sets and population-level data sets
  • Prepare tables of descriptive statistics
  • Perform bivariate and multivariate analyses; in particular, multivariate analyses informed by economics concepts.
  • Prepare data visualizations
  • Effectively communicate results and progress to investigators and project teams, through e-mails and regular project meetings
  • Contribute to manuscript and grant development
  • Coordinate and administer research dissemination opportunities, such as through online seminars and social media
  • Work closely with students to improve research products
  • Assist with one-off requests to improve research products, such as proofreading papers or grant applications, producing exploratory analytic files, providing citation management, and producing slides for a seminar presentation
  • Contribute to policy coding efforts using legal epidemiology methods
Shift

8:30am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday

Flexible hours and remote work is available for this position.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

A master's degree or doctoral degree is preferred. Evidence of data management for academic research projects, including evidence of peer-reviewed publications.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $65,000 - $80,000

Grade: GGS 10
