CMA - 2nd & 3rd Shift
PURPOSE OF YOUR JOB POSITION
The primary purpose of your job position is to administer medications in a conscientious and effective manner that protects the safety and welfare of the Resident and the institution.
DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY
As a Certified Medical Assistant you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS
1.1 Ensure that the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is followed in rendering nursing care.
1.2 Cooperate with other resident services when coordinating nursing services to ensure that the resident's total regimen of care is maintained.
1.3 Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
1.4 Participate as requested in surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies.
1.5 Make oral reports/recommendations concerning the activities of your shift as required.
1.6 Meet with your assigned nursing staff, as well as support personnel, in planning the shifts services, programs and activities.
1.7 Admit, transfer and discharge residents medicines as required.
- CHARTING AND DOCUMENTATION
2.1 Complete and file required record-keeping forms/charts upon the resident's admission, transfer and/or discharge.
2.2 Report all discrepancies noted concerning physician's order, medicine delivery, charting error, etc., to the Charge Nurse by the end of the shift.
2.3 Perform routine charting duties as required and in accordance with our established Charting and Documentation Policies and Procedures.
- DRUG ADMINISTRATION FUNCTIONS (IF ASSIGNED)
3.1 Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician/chart within one hour.
3.2 Assure that prescribed medication for one resident is not administered to another.
3.3 Verify the identity of the resident before administering the medication/treatment.
3.4 Order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary, and in accordance with our established policies.
3.5 Ensure that an adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies and equipment are on hand to meet the nursing needs of the residents. Report needs to the Charge Nurse.
3.6 Ensure that narcotic records are accurate for your shift by participating in a two (2) person count (on-coming and off-going shift). Report any discrepancies immediately to the Charge Nurse.
3.7 Dispose of drugs and narcotics as required, and in accordance with our established procedures.
3.8 Administer PRN medications in a timely manner, notifies licensed personnel of negative results. Chart result of PRN medication.
3.9 Receive medications from pharmacy. Notifies pharmacy if drug is mislabeled or illegible and follows policy on storage of discontinued medication from patients who have died.
3.10 Notify the Charge Nurse of automatic stop order prior to the last dosage being administered.
3.11 Review MAR for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of the physician's order and adherence to stop order policies.
3.12 Notify the Charge Nurse of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted on your shift. Assist with completing any necessary reports as a result of the discrepancy.
3.13 Check all medications against the MAR prior to administering to the resident.
3.14 Notify the Charge Nurse if the resident does not have the ordered medication available to dispense regardless of the reason.
3.15 Do not allow others in the Medication Room with you unless they are authorized to be in there.
3.16 Maintain keys in a secure place so they cannot be used by others. Pass keys off to the oncoming staff member at shift change
- PERSONNEL FUNCTIONS
4.1 Develop work assignments, and/or assist in completing and performing such tasks as requested.
4.2 Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other departments within the facility to assure that nursing services and activities can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
4.3 Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.
4.4 Meet with your shift's nursing personnel, on a regular basis to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services.
- NURSING CARE FUNCTIONS
5.1 Be knowledgeable of common effects, usual dosage of medication and common side effects of drugs administered. Notify licensed personnel if effects are noted.
5.2 Considers individual differences, preferences and needs of residents when delivering medicines.
5.3 Observe each resident as he/she takes their medication and does not leave the resident alone until that is accomplished
- STAFF DEVELOPMENT
6.1 Attend and participate in scheduled training and educational classes.
6.2 Attend and participate in scheduled orientation programs and activities.
6.3 Maintain current licensure at all times.
- SAFETY AND SANITATION
7.1 Ensure that your assigned work areas (i.e., medicine preparation rooms, medicine carts, etc.) are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner.
7.2 Participate in the maintenance of the procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment as requested.
7.3 Follow established hand-washing techniques in the administering of nursing care procedures and delivery of medicines.
7.4 Be aware of Isolation Procedures and Body Fluids Policy.
7.5 Be aware of MSDS.
- EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES
8.1 Recommend to the Charge Nurse the equipment and supply needs of your unit.
- RESIDENT RIGHTS
9.1 Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information.
9.2 Ensure that you treat all residents fairly and with kindness, dignity and respect.
9.3 Knock before entering the resident's room.
9.4 Report all grievances and complaints made by the resident to the Staff Nurse.
Works throughout the nursing service area (i.e., drug rooms, nurses' stations, resident rooms, etc.).
Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during working hours.
Is subject to frequent interruptions.
Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
Communicates with nursing personnel and other department personnel.
Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
Attends and participates in continuing education programs.
Is subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the work day.
Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
Maintains a liaison with the residents, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the residents' needs.
Must be able to work the hours required of the position.
Must be able to adhere to all policies of St. Simeon's including absenteeism or tardiness as well as all approved policies.
Must possess, as a minimum, an 8th grade education and completion of a state approved CMA course with certification of completion.
Must maintain certification by attending and completing state approved courses yearly.
None. On the job training provided.
Must possess a current, unencumbered certificate as a CMA.
Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel, and the general public.
Must be a minimum of twenty (20) years of age.
Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.
Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult residents.
Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
Must be able to relate information concerning a resident's condition.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day.
Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner.
Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Must function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
Must be able to lift or assist in moving more than own body weight.
Must be able to bend, walk, stand, lift, carry, push and handle equipment, supplies or patients exceeding 50 pounds.
Must be willing to perform tasks that may involve exposure to the resident's blood/body fluids.
