Assistant or Associate Professor Small Farms and Urban Horticultural Food Crop Production Systems
The Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications for a full-time, eleven-month, tenure-track faculty position. This position will serve as an Assistant or Associate Professor of small farm and urban horticultural food crop production systems with 80% teaching and 20% research efforts. The successful candidate is expected to establish an effective teaching and research program related to small farms, urban farms, community and regenerative small acreage food production, controlled environment food production, high tunnel and low tunnel production, and production in specialized or difficult urban environments. Responsibilities:
The Assistant or Associate Professor of small farm and urban horticultural food crop production systems with 80% teaching and 20% research efforts will teach upper division courses (three per semester) including Urban Horticulture Production (HORT 3713), Commercial Vegetable Production (HORT 3433), Hydroponics and Soilless Crop Production (HORT 3833), Horticulture Produce Safety (HORT 4010), Practices and Techniques for Small Farms (HORT 4990). The candidate will be expected to develop a new course or courses that would fit into the Horticulture BS curriculum, particularly the Urban Horticulture, Horticultural Business, or Horticultural Food Safety options, or the MS Horticulture program. The candidate will be expected to develop and document scholarship related to the outcomes and impacts of their teaching program. The candidate will be expected to advise undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate will be expected to provide service to the department, college, and university via teaching related committees and activities including Horticulture Club and the OSU Student Farm. They will conduct research and build a nationally recognized program focused on commercial and local vegetable food crop production systems. They will develop a successful externally funded research program. They will publish peer-reviewed manuscripts including scientific journal articles and manuscripts as direct outputs of their teaching and research efforts. The candidate will be expected to incorporate teaching activities and applied field research at one or multiple locations which may include the OSU Student Farm in Stillwater, OK, The Botanic Garden at OSU in Stillwater, OK, the OSU Cimarron Valley Research Station in Perkins, OK, the OSU Mingo Valley Research Station in Bixby, OK, or on-farm work in collaboration with producers and growers across the State.
The candidate will be expected to recruit, mentor, and serve as major advisor and graduate committee chair to graduate students in the Horticulture MS graduate program or the Crop Science, Food Science or Environmental Science interdisciplinary PhD programs. They will contribute to graduate education through service on graduate student committees and they will be expected to periodically serve on Department, Division, and/or University committees. The candidate will work cooperatively with OSU faculty and staff and serve as a member of the OSU food crop production systems team. Regular engagement in professional development opportunities and activities will be expected as well as completion of all required Departmental, Division, and/or University level required annual trainings.
Required qualifications:
The applicants for the Assistant or Associate Professor of small farm and urban horticultural food crop production systems with 80% teaching and 20% research position must possess a Ph.D. in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Sciences, or a related field such as Soil Science, Environmental Science, Weed Science, Entomology, or Plant Pathology, with emphasis on horticultural crops, by the time of hire. Candidates that have, or will have earned, the PhD degree in 2023 are encouraged to apply.
Preferred qualifications:
Preferred qualifications include previous experience and work in horticultural crop production and small or urban farm production; and previous experience that demonstrates successful teaching, student advising, and mentoring. The individual should possess the ability to effectively lead a team as well as contribute as a team member for interdisciplinary collaboration. They should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Previous experience serving as a PI or co-PI of extramural, competitive grant projects is also preferred. The demonstrated ability to use traditional and innovative teaching techniques is preferred.
