Coordinator of Strategic Communications and Outreach (FP533A)
ODU is seeking candidates for a Coordinator of Strategic Communications and Outreach (full-time, 12 month) position. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of strategic communications for the Old Dominion University College of Arts and Letters. This position will design and manage all internal and external communications, social media, and public relations efforts and activities for the College of Arts and Letters, including the development and implementation of yearly and long-term strategic public relations plans. As a key member of the dean’s staff, work closely with the ODU Office of Communication as the representative of the College of Arts and Letters. Effectively and proactively manage the College’s earned and owned media, including social media, websites, and news features. Promote academic programs, departments, as well as the College’s outreach activities and those of the Arts and Letters Executive Advisory Council. Develop metrics for measuring the ROI on communications campaigns and regularly assess campaigns through applying these metrics. Liaise with the Executive Director for the Arts/ Arts@ODU to promote university arts initiatives.
Required Education: Master’s Degree in Communications, English, Marketing, Public Relations or a related field of study or a bachelor’s degree and related experience equivalent to a master’s degree in Communications, English, Marketing, Public Relations or related field of study.
Required Qualifications: Considerable knowledge of marketing, public relations and communications principles/practices and strategies. Working knowledge of data collection, evaluation, and reporting of program/plan effectiveness. Considerable knowledge of and skill in using Microsoft Office and Adobe software such as Creative Cloud or similar applications. Considerable skill in editing, grammar and writing persuasively. Considerable knowledge of social media avenues and technologies for current emerging trends in marketing and advertising. Comprehensive communication skills and the ability to effectively interact with clients of diverse cultures. Demonstrated ability to assist in the completion of layout and design of all college publications. Demonstrated ability to identify, organize and accomplish tasks in priority order and keep several projects moving ahead simultaneously all with a minimum of supervision. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of the dean’s office team. Demonstrated ability to interpret guidelines, policies and procedures to fit changing situations.
Considerable experience in developing and managing all aspects of effective communications and public relations plans, preferably for programs in higher education. Considerable experience in professional writing and editing, including for social media. Considerable experience at writing research press releases, as well as feature articles and news stories. Some experience with social media account management platforms (such as Hootsuite).
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated ability to interact well and maintain effective relationships with alumni preferred. Considerable experience in developing and managing all aspects of effective communications and public relations plans, for programs in higher education.
