Description
The Data Manager will work with FLI staff members to assist with data processing and analysis for a number of programs. Program areas include invasive species, mercury, and water quality. Data analyzed may include point intercept macrophyte surveys, watercraft stewards, sonar data, water quality data including nutrients and harmful algal blooms, and more. The Data Manager will develop computing scripts and tools to analyze data collected through fieldwork and other research activities using R, R-Studio, Shiny, GIS, Python, and more. This position will also have a focus on documenting and organizing analytical scripts and outputs and archiving those processes for future replication. The data manager will assist program management in creating figures, maps, and tables to report for the various FLI programs.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Process and analyze field and laboratory data - descriptive statistics, correlative analysis, linear modeling, geospatial analysis.
  • Conduct real time data QA/QC for various field-based projects.
  • Produce figures, tables, graphs for analysis and reporting purposes.
  • Develop and document procedures for data analyses, QA/QC, and reporting processes.
  • Lead regular meetings with FLI program managers to discuss project deliverables and updates.
  • Meet with FLI staff to strategize and develop research opportunities and manuscripts/reports.
  • Develop and maintain tools for accessing and communicating project outcomes to partners and stakeholders.
  • Utilize best practices for archiving field data and analyses.
  • Demonstrate knowledge for the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree required, Master’s degree preferred (Ecology, Biology, Natural Resources, GIS, Statistics, or related field) or equivalent professional experience.
  • Scientific experience with some or all of the following: R, RStudio environment, Python, ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, data collection apps (ESRI Field Maps, Survey123).
  • A minimum of three years of related professional experience required.
  • Understanding of freshwater ecosystems and associated issues.
  • Demonstrated success with developing statistical analyses of scientific datasets.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with overlapping timelines
  • Understanding of freshwater ecosystems and issues associated with the Finger Lakes watershed
  • Experience translating scientific analyses to a range of audiences in various formats (written, spoken, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a variety of partners and colleagues to meet goals
  • Experience developing and following best practices for sharing data processes and analyses in a team setting

Other Information:

The Finger Lakes PRISM is one of eight PRISMs supported via funding from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund as administered by NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position with current funding expected to continue through December 31, 2023. Position is based out of the Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Willingness and ability to travel and to work nights and weekends on occasion. Possession of a valid U.S. driver’s license required. Employee will be reimbursed at the federally approved rate for work related travel when using personal vehicle This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
