Position Overview

The Fitness Intern will assist the Assistant Director of Fitness and Marketing lead and support a growing and innovative Fitness program based on the BUBeWell experience framework for the Office of Recreation &Wellness and assist with efforts for the department of Health & Recreation. The dynamic Fitness program includes personal training, group fitness, and virtual programs and resources. This position will also help provide oversight of the HRC Fitness equipment, maintenance, purchases, and supporting student employees and services that helps develop and maintain faculty/staff relationships that promotes and improves the health and well-being of the Butler campus community. This position will help provide direct oversight of approximately 35 to 40-part time and student employees including Personal Trainers, Group Fitness Instructors, and Equipment Specialists. This position will strive to assist the Office of Recreation & Wellness foster an inclusive environment that seeks to serve a diverse campus community through actively developing and implementing strategies and programs to engage under-represented populations. This position directly reports to the Assistant Director of Fitness and Marketing.

This is a part-time position with a tentative start date of August 2024.

The Office of Recreation & Wellness creates a foundation of well-being by providing exceptional, inclusive, and innovative programs, services, and facilities for the Butler community to enhance the student experience.

Responsibilities
  • Overseeing diverse student staff in the areas of personal training, group fitness, and fitness floor operations
  • Assist with the evaluation, documentation, repair, and replacement of all fitness related equipment
  • Maintaining fitness area related email accounts
  • Help plan and facilitate all staff meetings
  • Assist in the planning and executing Office of Recreation and Wellness related programming
  • Maintain scheduled weekly office hours
  • Attend weekly meetings with the Assistant Director of Fitness and Marketing
  • Participate in staff mid-semester and end-of-semester evaluations
  • Create, maintain, and update job aids, handbooks, and protocols for fitness staff(s)
  • Update and maintain certification databases
  • Create and manage contact lists
  • Create and send monthly newsletters
  • Assist in the in-house certification classes
  • Other duties as assigned
Group Fitness
  • Gather instructor availability and create semesterly group fitness schedules
  • Track and assess class participation counts and assists in evaluation of participation of group fitness classes and adjust classes as needed
  • Communicate schedule changes to staff and participants both physically and digitally
  • Assist in the customized group fitness class program
Personal Training
  • Assist with client intake and trainer-client pairings, including client transfers
  • Maintain a minimum of two clients or one client and one fitness class
  • Assign individual Fitness Assessments as needed
  • Manage the Find Your Fit Exercise & Nutrition and the Find Your Fit Running & Nutrition programs
Fitness Floor Staff
  • Develop schedules and assist with evaluation of staff
  • Maintain a comprehensive inventory system to support preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Engage staff to maintain cleaning standards
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum education
  • Minimum years of experience in a discipline or area of work
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities necessary to perform successfully in the job

Position Information
  • Pay Scale: $15/hour
  • Hours: 30 hours/week
  • Commitment: 1 year agreement (2+ years contingent upon successful evaluation at the end of 1 year)
